It’s Time to Stop Wasting Time in Your Career
Summary: Make the most of your remaining time with a simple time-tracking experiment. If you feel you’re wasting time at work, you might be showing signs you’re ready for a career change. Try this exercise to give you new data to help you take the next step towards the career you really want.
The end of the year is almost here! I hope you've made the most of 2024. There's still time left to wrap the year on a high note, and it has to do with how you spend your time.
Time is such a gift, isn’t it?
When we're having fun, that's a good time.
When we're crazy busy, we have no time.
When we feel we could be somewhere or doing something else, we feel we're wasting time.
In the last decade of helping over-thinkers find their passion, “wasting time” is one of the top indicators that we’re ready for our next learning curve. It’s one of the signs for career change readiness.
If you feel you're wasting time or not spending it the way you want, try this simple experiment. It's hard to change what you don't see or understand.
Best of all, you just need a post-it note.
5-Day Time Tracking Experiment
For the next 5 days, measure how well you spend your time.
On the post-it, write M, T, W, R, F down the left side.
Give yourself a gold star for every hour of each workday that was time well spent.
Update the post-it at lunch and at the end of the workday.
On Friday, look at your post-it one last time. Reflect on how many stars you earned this week.
Each star = you've enjoyed the time spent *and* you gained/maintained your personal power. You’ll gain a baseline of your time spent to help you improve.
The first step in making any change is awareness, and this little exercise is one way to try. Feel free to modify as needed to make the experiment work best for you. I’ll be joining you and post my results here on Friday, December 20.
